Two Ingredients Often Found in Creams and Serums for Controlling Acne

Just about everyone will develop acne at some point in life, but the problem ends up being a lot more persistent and severe for some people than for most. Fortunately, most acne issues can be controlled or even eliminated with the use of the right types of over-the-counter products or prescription medications. There are now a few anti acne creams on the market that even support skin health and appearance in other ways at the same time.

Over the Counter Acne Products That Actually Work

Acne develops when the skin follicles that produce strands of hair end up becoming clogged with dead cells, oily residues, and other types of detritus. While acne is most common among teenagers, even many adults suffer from chronic acne that does not go away despite the affected skin being kept as clean and dry as possible.

While some who suffer from acne have reported that dietary adjustments can help, most find that only turning to specialized over-the-counter products or prescription medications can make a real difference. There are a couple of different ingredients that are most often used to control or even do away with acne entirely.

  • Benzoyl peroxide. Available today in both retail and prescription strength formulations, benzoyl peroxide was the first compound to be used successfully in the treatment of acne. While benzoyl peroxide can be effective at controlling relatively mild cases of acne, it will almost always dry out the skin significantly in the process. In some cases, a relatively minor amount of resulting dryness will seem like a fair tradeoff for the reduction in acne symptoms that occur. In others, a more concentrated application of benzoyl peroxide that produces unacceptable dryness will be required to make any progress at all.
  • Retinol. Many newer products that aim at controlling acne include the ingredient retinol, a compound that helps reduce inflammation. By preventing follicles from becoming clogged in the first place, retinol can sometimes reduce the severity of acne without causing the skin dryness so typical of benzoyl peroxide.

There is Always Hope for Anyone Who Suffers From Acne

Between these two common ingredients, there are many different products on the market that will often be worth trying out for those who suffer from acne. Many who do so discover that this especially common problem can be successfully controlled.
